While Everyone's Going Ga-Ga Over JT and Samuel L., I'm All About S.

So you think I haven't abandoned all of you, I'm hard at work on the new Craig Brewer film Black Snake Moan and the hours are long and tedious. I won't be updating very much until we wrap out October 28th, so please continue with your life's work and know that I'm engaged in part of my own right now.

One of the great joys I get from working on films like this one is not merely the name actors who are working on the picture -- occasionally, some of my favorite character actors appear, and none I have come across so far am I meeting with as much excitement as this one. S. Epatha Merkerson is best known as Lt. Anita Van Buren on Law & Order, but I still fondly remember her both as Reba the Mail Lady from Pee Wee's Playhouse and her Tony-winning performance as Bernice in the Broadway production of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. Tomorrow, she will be working with us and I am very much looking forward to it. I hope all of you are well and you're taking your vitamins and stuff. I'm going to bed now and try to get 6 good hours of sleep.

I Haven't Been Avoiding You, I Just Found A Way To Look Forward Rather Than Behind.

So to my friends and readers and family and whoever else, I just found a groove that I've been in for a few days now -- I'm working on that project that I was stressing about wanting to be involved with and it's taking up most of my time. We're talking about 12-16 hour days, but that's about normal for this sort of thing.

In response to some friends/family members' next question, no I am not going to write DIRECTLY about any happenings with the project on this blog because of a confidentiality agreement that we sign when we start work. As I have to remind people frequently, I'm not just me when I'm working, I'm also the job. As such, I can't turn this into a gossip blog regarding the project because after all, some of the people on the project actually read my website and I have to honor my agreeements with them.

I can tell you this much, though. There is an inexorable feeling of lightness in my life right now, to have a sense of being both needed and wanted by the people that I work with. I think I want to run away and join the circus.

Now, is there a doctor in the house? I need a cortizone shot or some Nasocort badly or I will never get my voice back. "This is a marathon, not a sprint," one of my co-workers told me after two long days of moving the crowd into action. "You gotta be in it for the long haul on this one, so conserve your strength." I appreciate the advice there, I only wish I'd heard it before I put the level on 10. Now I have something I have to live up to, a standard I have to meet, and I need my voice back to make that work.

Somebody buy me a burrito. I'm hungry.

Love In Action VII: The Final Countdown.

Don't celebrate just yet, but something has happened. The State of TN has ordered the closing of Love In Action's two facilities operating in Memphis and determined they are in continued violation of our state's licensing regulations. Here's an excerpt from the story:
The state inspected two facilities in Memphis on Aug. 19 and determined Love In Action International Inc. was providing housing, meals and personal care for mentally ill patients without a license, according to a subsequent letter to the organization from the Department of Mental Health.

The department gave Love In Action until Sept. 23 to cease operation of the facilities and apply for a state license.
I'm sure I'll have more to say on this as time moves on myself, but for now I can say with great certainty that Love In Action is going the "martyr route" with their whole defense. "Oh look at us! We are being persecuted for our religious beliefs by these homosexuals and our government!"

I have news for you guys: you're not Jesus Christ, you don't even deserve to walk in his shoes because, at the end of it all, you're using his teachings as an excuse to do things which you know are completely wrong. You lie. You dispense medication to patients without a license. You purposefully seek to hide the truth of who you are in order to gain some shallow form of acceptance from people who will never fully accept you. You even, allegedly, take money from insurance companies to the tune of thousands and thousands of dollars to provide something which you aren't licensed to provide.

You give Christianity a bad name, and the only thing of which anyone should ever be ashamed is of devoting themselves to your sadly misguided journeys into faith.

If I were a Christian, I'd be doing everything I could right now to make sure people in positions of authority knew that what Love In Action does is not ministry. It's therapy, it always was therapy, and it always will be no matter what words you change on your website and in your pamphlets to make people think it isn't.

But you'll just shut down here and reopen somewhere else and keep running until you've run out of ideas and supporters.

I don't think anyone involved with Love In Action is a bad person, but good people often do bad things. When they do them in the name of Jesus Christ, they insult and demean worshippers the world over. The purity of your motives is not in question: it's the purity of your actions.

Home, Home Again...I Like To Be Here When I Can.

Usually I'm good about updating for an hour when I get home from something like CMJ. However, this week I am bookended. I have a long drive for work and I have to take off like right now. To make matters worse, I have laryngitis. On a positive note, CMJ was both amazing and horrific -- I had the best and the worst of times all at once. New York Effin City, y'all.

Anyways, I gotta run. I'm panicking.

Pastor Potatoes? Can I Have Some More Lithium, or Why Love In Action Has Some Big Problems.

Apparently, among the laundry list of problems that explain the core of Love In Action's inability to become licensed, is serious medical malfeasance. I have learned today that Love In Action has been dispensing medication to people with mental illnesses, and the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities is none too happy about this. A story should be forthcoming regarding all of the potentially damaging stuff facing Love In Action, but inevitably it comes down to a couple of minor bullet points:

  • Potential insurance fraud
  • Prescribing medication without a license

These are very serious matters of which the state has become aware. The big fear among those of us who rallied for attention to their practices is that Love In Action may be trying to martyr itself by ignoring the state's demand for compliance. It reminds me of an old joke I've heard a dozen or more times (with sincere apologies to those recovering from Hurricane Katrina, this joke is not aimed at you in any way):

A man is stuck in his house when a flash flood roars through his neighborhood. The water rises up the porch. A neighbor comes by with a canoe and says, "Need a ride?" The man replies, "No thanks. God will take care of me." The man in the canoe paddles away. The water rises up the second story of the house, and the man is standing in his second-story window. A large boat comes by, and the captain offers, "Would you like me to get you out of here?" The man replies, "No thanks, God will take care of me." The flood water soon rises to the top of the house. The man is left standing on the roof. A helicopter hovers over him. The pilot offers to lower a ladder down and rescue him, but the man still says, "No thanks. I know God will save me." The man drowns, and when he gets to heaven, he says, "God, why didn't you save me?" God replies, "What do you mean? I sent two boats and a helicopter for you."

On The Road Again...I Just Can't Wait To Get On The Road Again...

Well, this will be my last update for a few days. I'm headed off to the great wilds of New York City for the CMJ Music Marathon to get my palms greased, raked over the coals by trustafarian indie rockers, hang out with old friends, and talk shop. Other than Living Better Electrically, Lucero, Mary Lou Lord, Little Brother and !!! (Chk-Chk-Chk), I have no earthly idea what else I'm seeing. Suffice if to say that I'm flying by the seat of my drawers here. Anyways, if you're going to be at CMJ, you can send me an email and let me know. Maybe we'll hook up at one of the (gasp) THREE panels I'm now scheduled on.

I'm like...wait...you mean, someone gives a crap what I have to say about music blogging?

Anyways, you kids behave yourselves and go get some Lemongrass Tofu at Pho Hoa Binh while I'm away. Keep it real, nahh mean?

BREAKING: Why Is John Smid Smiling? His "Ministry" Is About To Get Shut Down By The State of Tennessee.

According to a confidential source, an investigation started in early July by the Tennessee Department of Health has yielded the decision that Love In Action is in continued violation of the State of TN Dept. of Health's facility licensing requirements. In two strongly worded letters issued to Love In Action, the department is demanding that the facility at 4780 Yale Rd. become compliant with the State of Tennessee's licensing requirements or face a state ordered closure of their facility. A first letter sent to the facility by the department was returned unanswered by Love In Action. A second letter demanding full compliance grants the facility until this coming Thursday, September 15th to fulfill their licensing obligations or face mandatory shutdown of the facility. More information on this developing story as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Here is a copy of the review from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities (DMHDD) (With Thanks To QAC and Peterson Toscano)

DMHDD staff met with Mr. John Smid, Executive Director of Love In Action, on August 19, 2005. Based on the meeting, it was determined that Love In Action is operating two unlicensed mental health supportive living facilities in Memphis.

In accordance with DMHDD's licensure procedures, a certified letter was sent to Mr. Smid. The letter dated August 23, 2005, stated licensure staff's determination that Love In Action was operating two unlicensed facilities. The letter further stated that he must stop operating the homes within seven (7) days of receiving the letter, or apply for a license within the same time period.

The Department's Office of Licensure determines the seven day period based on the date the organization receives the letter. This is verified by return receipt from the Post Office. Licensure did not receive a return receipt from the post office, so another letter was sent Thursday, September 8th.

If Mr. Smid does not respond by September 15th, licensure staff will revisit Love In Action, to determine if the agency is still operating the two homes. If the homes are still operating, licensure will recommend to the Department's Commissioner that a cease and desist order be issued to Love In Action, in accordance with DMHDD Licensure Law.

When The Lights Go Down In The Citaaaaaaaay.... Los Angeles Blackout Knocked Cherry Blossom Special Offline For A Bit.

Did you miss me? I missed you, and it was all thanks to a darned blackout in Los Angeles where my WONDERFUL hosting company, Dreamhost, is located. Comparatively, my downtime of about two hours was a blessing compared to the headaches Los Angelinos are wrapped up in right now. Some dude in Burbank was installing an automatic transmission system, you know...regular stuff that we all do. He accidentally cut and then connected the red wire to the green wire and VOOM, just like that, "Honey, I blew up the San Fernando Valley!" It was like a scene from a bad Hollywood film, apparently, as 50 percent of the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water's customers lost power in a cascade of darkness.

Luckily for everyone, no terrorists were involved in this debacle, leading to speculation amongst Los Angelinos that someone had figured out a clever way to give thousands of their co-workers the rest of the afternoon off.

Ok, talk amongst yourselves. I got stuff to do, k? But don't bother with checking your MySpace for the thousandth time today because guess what?!? YEP, you guessed it -- Los Angeles, baby.

eBay To Purchase Skype For $2.6bn - $4.1bn

Well, it finally happened. eBay is finalizing an agreement to purchase the voice call over internet provider Skype for between $2.6bn abd $4.1bn depending on who you ask. Either way, that's a big Twinkie. The hope, from eBay's standpoint, is to strengthen the relationships of their enormous online community by providing a better way of communicating between buyers and sellers that would, presumably, increase the trust factor of their marketplace. Go here to read the full story. There is another earlier story located here on DesignTechnica.

What does this mean for users of both eBay and Skype? I think it's going to make the cost of eBay's already increasing seller fees go up further. I don't think I'm going to trust someone more just because I can place a call to them using Skype. It's not a replacement for reading feedback, and I'll be interested to see where this goes. Thoughts or comments?

No Whammies, No Whammies, No Whammies, Stop At...$4000 AND A Bonus Spin? AGAIN? The Michael Larsen Incident.

As a young person, I was enamored with the show Press Your Luck. Nobody likes being sick, but there were days where I was so happy to be home sick from school, nothing mattered besides the chance to watch another episode. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember an episode where a guy kept winning and winning and there seemed to be no end in sight! If you were at home watching, you saw what looked like an ordinary episode with a very lucky contestant. The reality: the fix was in, and the producers at CBS never knew what hit them until it was far too late. Someone (maybe Goldenfiddle?) pointed me towards this story about the Press Your Luck incident involving Michael Larsen, the contestant who magically avoided all whammies and played the game to unbeatable perfection -- to the tune of $110,237, an unheard of amount on a game show such as this. Go read it -- it doesn't have a happy ending, but what story about cheating the system ever does?

Now I Ain't Sayin He's A Gold Digger, But He Ain't Messin With No Broke N****s. The Legendary K.O. Says "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People"

Reissue, repackage, repackage, re-evaluate the songs -- and that's with just two weeks of life in it, too. Kanye West's latest album, Late Registration, remains at the top of the Billboard Album Chart this week, and Kanye's comments remain somewhere near the middle of the agreement chart (depending on whether you're Usher and Mike Williams or you're someone who was trapped in an attic for five days without food or water up to your neck in flooding). My man Pushermania down at HoustonSoReal blog used a specially remade version of Kanye's song "Gold Digger" (from the new album) as the opening track for his show Damage Control.

This link will take you to an MP3 of the Damage Control show from last Wednesday, and you can download both the original and radio-friendly versions of the remade "Gold Digger" by The Legendary K.O. called, not surprisingly, "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People". I gotta say, this track is hotter than a Coleman grill in August cooking up BBQ on the north edge of the sun, so go GET IT NOW and LISTEN.

Frustrated With PayPal? I Found A Good Alternative.

The growing sense of frustration with PayPal, what with their complicated verification process and high fees for Premier account holders, has led to a lot of research for a decent alternative. It was recently suggested that I try checking into Moneybookers, a UK-based web portal that accepts payments from 30 different countries including the USA through all major credit cards of those countries and checking account. They even have an Escrow-based auction payments program which allows for payment of an auction to be held in escrow until the buyer receives their merchandise.

The sign up and verification process is much faster and simpler than PayPal's, and it is FREE to receive money. There is a 1% charge to send money to others, and the cost for withdrawing funds to your bank account is a flat rate of USD 4.40. However, if you compare to PayPal's 1.9-3.8% per transaction charge, you're actually coming out ahead if you are receiving any amount of payment(s) above $220.00 USD.

Unlike PayPal, where the recipient of the money often gets charged a fee to receive the money, receiving money is always free. The premium for sending money is much less expensive than comparable quick pay alternatives.

If you do business or need to recieve payments for eBay or on the web, it's worth looking into Moneybookers as an alternative to PayPal's high prices.

Sign up for the service and test it out, leave some comments and tell people what you think of Moneybookers.

Desaparecidos - The Happiest Place On Earth

(AP Photo/ Donna McWilliam)

Desaparecidos - The Happiest Place On Earth

I want to pledge allegiance to
The country where I live
I don't want to be ashamed to be American
But opportunity no, it don't exist
It's the opiate of the populace
We need some harder shit now
The truth is getting around
And each public school is a halfway house
Where the huddled masses sober up and up enough
There's not enough to fatten the cows
And feed all of us
It's just a rationing of luck
What can't be bought gets raffled off
Oh God good God shed greed on thee
Your shining sea turned a dirty green
From the industry
off the shores of New Jersey

I got a letter from the army
So I think that I'll enlist
I'm not brave or proud of nothing
I just want to kill something
Too bad that now-a-days you just point and click
Swing low satellite
Hot white chariot
In the computer's blue glare
The bombs burst in the air
There was a city once now nothing is there
Our freedom comes at their expense
It makes sense, does it? Dollars and cents
They're stretching barbed wire across the picket fence
That is surrounding your housing development
Just in case you lack the confidence
Oh God my God give strength to thee
These amber waves purple majesty
Are nothing but backdrops for Disney

We'll look up close
It is superimposed on a blank blue screen
It is fantasy fucking magical
The dreams floats like a chemical
Through each snapped synapse our television past
That is beautiful no more
No more

I Will Never Talk Shit About Celine Dion Again As Long As I Live.

Watching this segment from CNN's Larry King special "How You Can Help", where Celine Dion makes an empassioned plea to viewers, all I can think to myself is what an asshole I am for ever talking smack about this woman ever in my life. No, I'm not a fan of her music. But people do like her, they are fans of her music, and hearing her talk with so much passion about her pledge of $1M to the rescue efforts and her compassion for the impoverished thousands left in the hurricane's wake erases anything else. I don't have to like her music, but she has earned the deepest of my respect. (With Thanks to Crooks And Liars For The Piece)

Live Blogging From Inside: A Hurricane Katrina Survivor

If you are interested in keeping up with further events as they unfold in New Orleans, The Interdictor's Live Journal is a frequently updated blog from a technical support person who stayed in New Orleans to rescue valuable data. If you are going to link to his blog, please use the following URL: http://mgno.com.

You Had Better Believe It: All That Is Left Of New Orleans Is The Bitter Sting Of Tears.

If you're like me, you've been sitting here updating your blog for the last several days, almost motionless except for a few phone calls to regional aid organizations, to friends, and the like. I was invited to any number of parties this past week. I ignored them all, because to be honest with you I'm in no mood for any kind of a party right now.

When I read and then watched this tale from Aaron Broussard, President of Jefferson Parish in New Orleans relaying the story of of "one of the worst cases of abandonment of Americans on American soil ever", the tears flowed out of my own eyes envisioning a fate so horrific it could not go unheard. Near the end, Broussard broke down while telling the personal story of one of his colleagues:

"I want to give you one last story and I’ll shut up and let you tell me whatever you want to tell me. The guy who runs this building I’m in, Emergency Management, he’s responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, “Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?” and he said, “Yeah, Mama, somebody’s coming to get you.” Somebody’s coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody’s coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody’s coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody’s coming to get you on Friday… and she drowned Friday night. She drowned Friday night! [Sobbing] Nobody’s coming to get us. Nobody’s coming to get us. The Secretary has promised. Everybody’s promised. They’ve had press conferences. I’m sick of the press conferences. For god’s sakes, just shut up and send us somebody."
How can we as a nation of people allow this injustice to stand?

I have crises going on in my own life that need my attention, people who are depending on me in my own way. But when I see what has been happening, I can't have a good time. I can't smile and look the other way. I can't think about anything except for what I can do.

I don't fault any of my friends, many of them are having a hard time as well. Several have family directly affected by this tragedy. There is a part of me that dreams of being able to shut myself off from reality and escape from it when things of this magnitude occur.

I hope my friends will forgive me that I can't do that, as I forgive them for not being able to stop what they are doing to help. Thank you for understanding why I cannot be there for your parties or take pleasure from our gatherings so long as there is this kind of suffering so close to home. I'm not judging you or hoping to look like I'm better than you are for caring in a different way, and if you're really my friend I hope you know that.

It's just that some other people need my time much more right now, and there will be time for us all to get together again soon enough.

PayPal To Something Awful: We Can Only Give The Money To United Way. $30,000 In Donations To Be Returned To Contributors.

According to updates posted to the Something Awful website's front page, conversations with PayPal have only caused more problems for Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka and the thousands of website visitors who donated nearly $30,000 in less than 24 hours to his pledge drive.

Earlier in the day, Kyanka spoke with a representative at PayPal who indicated that they had no way to get the money to the Red Cross as he was requesting. PayPal is only capable of delivering contributions to the charity of their choice, United Way, and offers no opportunity for individuals to donate to other charitable organizations thru their website.

Kyanka wrote, "'But the donations are still going to the relief organizations in New Orleans, right?' I asked. She confirmed yes, they were. 'Then transfer all the money to that fund. I doubt any of our readers will send in hate mail proclaiming their love of the Red Cross but adamant despise of the United Way.'"

What users did, in fact do, was to email Kyanka and point out a number of links demonstrating where United Way's former chief executive, Oral Suer, pled guilty to defrauding the charity of almost $500,000 just last year and where Charity Navigator rated United Way's handling of New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina at only two stars with 14.1% overhead cost while giving Red Cross a four star rating and only 8.9% overhead cost.

"I have begin to form doubts that giving more money to the United Way, money that Paypal is taking a percentage and profit from, is a bad idea," Kyanka wrote in his most recent update. "I wanted to donate the money to the Red Cross, but Paypal insisted they are unable to do this, instead claiming the only organization the funds could be diverted to is the United Way. I called their offices back and asked them to refund everybody's money, which [PayPal's Customer Service Representative] promised would happen soon."

There has been no official word from PayPal on how they plan to resolve the issue other than in refunding money to the thousands of people who made contributions to Something Awful's pledge drive.

PayPal Holding $20,000 In Hurricane Relief Donations In Limbo From Internet Forum's Users With No Explanation.

Something Awful, one of the widest read, best organized and most popular online forum communities, has had over $20,000 in user donations earmarked for victims of Hurricane Katrina held without cause or explanation by the company thru which the donations have been collected, PayPal.

Something Awful, an extremely sharp, cynical comedy website which boasts millions of hits each day and over 50,000 active members, is a victim of Hurricane Katrina itself as its server datacenter is located in New Orleans. When the forum's datacenter went offline Thursday, the main forums page was replaced by a page explaining the whereabouts of their forums.

The founder and operator of the website, Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka, as a gesture of goodwill to those affected by the hurricane, began accepting donations on Saturday thru PayPal which would be sent to the American Red Cross. Something Awful's payment gateway, which they use to accept credit cards for subscription to their forum, was also affected by the downtime of the datacenter. Kyanka agreed that in exchange for their donations, he would send out Something Awful related merchandise to forum members as a gesture of thanks for their contributions.

Within seven hours time, the fundraising effort brought in $19,149.69 in donations (after PayPal's fees were deducted), nearly $3,500 in donations per hour -- a rather tidy sum for an internet community and one which would no doubt bring much needed relief to those still reeling from the hurricane.

But last night some time around 9pm, just after they had reached $20,000 in donations, PayPal inexplicably shut down the donation account apparently responding to some form of customer complaints -- for an action less than 7 hours old. According to PayPal, "We have received more than one report of suspicious behavior from your buyers."

To say the very least, this did not sit well with forum members or the site's owner. In a statement posted to the site last night, Kyanka cited irresponsible behavior on PayPal's part which will needlessly delay the funds reaching those in need. "I doubt the CEOs of eBay and Paypal give a crap about this crappy little website and our insignificant drive to help out people in a time of crisis," Kyanka wrote, "but this drive meant a lot to me, and once again Paypal has completely screwed over another customer bringing in plenty of money in their ridiculous 'transaction fees.'" PayPal, an eBay owned company, currently charges customers who receive payments from other PayPal members anywhere from 1.9% up to 3.8% in transaction fees per transaction done thru their site, regardless of the purpose of the transaction.

Kyanka insists that if PayPal will not allow him to accept any further donations using their service, that PayPal should at the very least quickly send the money to American Red Cross themselves. "You can close my account and shut me out, but you'd better take every single cent people donated and send it directly to the Red Cross. Folks from around the world trusted you with their money, and you'd better make sure it gets to where it was going, and I'm not talking about your wallets."

PayPal has been the subject of repeated controversy for their actions with regards to closing membership accounts without notice. In July of 2004, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose approved a $9.25 million settlement in a class action suit alleging that the online payment platform owned by eBay unreasonably restricted, froze or closed customer accounts.

Volunteer Memphis Overwhelmed By Outpouring Of Support, Asks For Moderation As Needs Are Assessed.

I just finished a phone conversation with Terry Coggins, one of the many hard working volunteers manning the phone banks at Volunteer Memphis. According to Terry, Volunteer Memphis is committed to a "measured response" during this time of crisis. "Because of the devestation we are seeing in New Orleans and Biloxi, some of the things we want to do in order to help may seem much more urgent to those of us who are here in Memphis than they actually are," Terry tells me. "I have a woman on the phone with a church group who, out of the kindness of their hearts, prepared food for 500 people. The problem is that they've already taken the step to prepare the food for the 500 people. Now, I have to find a place where that food can go. I don't know that we have 500 people for that food to go to."

It isn't that there aren't 500 people who need the meals, Terry tells me, it's simply that there may not be a current need for 500 already-prepared meals at the time they are being offered. If the meals aren't eaten, then valuable resources go to waste.

The problem which Terry and other volunteers who are referring people for aid and assistance now face is one of those who, in a real desire to want to help out, offer too much help in areas where a need for help may not exist at that particular time. "In our rush to want to help, we may be actually wasting resources which will eventually be needed. It may be today, it may be in a couple of days or a week, but those resources will be needed." To keep communications on-track and for resources to be made useful, Terry recommends, "Stay in contact, stay close to the organizations that you want to help out to find out what you can do." Church groups, contributors and individual offers of aid and assistance should be referred through the agencies that are here so that we don't extend too much help in one area at the wrong time.

Volunteer Memphis, which acts as a referral service for people who want to volunteer with local agencies, has had more than 2000 offers of volunteer service in the past 5 days. "The response has been overwhelming," Terry told me. "We absolutely need and want people to continue to offer their time, and we encourage you to work with us if you can. To the people who are offering to volunteer their time, please be patient with us. We may not be able to get back to you in 24-48 hours as we normally would. However, eventually I guarantee someone will get back to you. It may be several days before you hear from us, but we appreciate the outpouring of support from the community and you will be contacted when agencies, including ours, are in need of volunteers."

COUNTERPOINT: (With Thanks To Justin Hand)

this was forwarded from an old friend of mine..... if you'd like to help, here is what we need here in memphis and the midsouth....

FYI:

I just got back from the Red Cross on Central (right before you get to Lamar and there are a LOT of refugees there. They are mostly in need of diapers, formula, baby wipes, baby food, toiletries and things like that. They said they have more clothes donated than they know what to do with. There are lots of babies and toddlers, but really a mix of all ages. I'm sure there are similar places around Memphis, and maybe St. Louis too.

Thanks,
tina

CONDI, GET GEORGE ORWELL ON THE PHONE -- I NEED IDEAS, aka Welcome to 1984

AMERICAblog has a story with a letter from Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu in which she explains how Bush faked the repair of a levee yesterday for a photo opportunity. What in the name of holy hell is this man thinking?

At least, at the very least, help is on the way and in motion -- but this sort of behaviour by the Bush administration is intolerable.

BREAKING NEWS: Jefferson Parish Emergency Preparedness Director Says FEMA Didn't Keep It's Word

(Mirrored Here As A Courtesy To The New Orleans Times-Picayune With Thanks To Reporter Mark Schleifstein)

by Mark Schleifstein
Staff writer

Jefferson Parish Emergency Preparedness Director Walter Maestri said Friday night that the Federal Emergency Management Agency reneged on a promise to begin relieving county emergency preparedness staffers 48 hours after Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans metropolitan area.

Maestri’s staff has been working almost around the clock since Katrina approached the Louisiana coastline on Sunday. Today, the staff is expected to finally switch to a 12 hours on/12 hours off schedule, he said, adding that they’re both tired and demoralized by the lack of assistance from federal officials.

“We had been told we would be on our own for 48 hours,” Maestri said. “Prepare to survive and in 48 hours the cavalry would arrive.

“Well, where are they?” he said.

Maestri said the agreement was signed by officials with the Southeastern Louisiana Emergency Preparedness Officials Association, the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of this year’s Hurricane Pam tabletop exercise. That exercise began the process of writing a series of manuals explaining how to respond to a catastrophic disaster. Financed by FEMA, it included a variety of federal, state and local officials.

A FEMA spokesman late Friday said they couldn’t confirm or deny that the agency signed the agreement Maestri referred to.

FEMA Director Michael Brown also raised Maestri’s ire when he said in a television interview Friday that he waited so long to respond because he didn’t want to interfere with local aid attempts, and that local officials hadn’t asked FEMA to come in.

“My response is very simple,” Maestri said in an interview on a cell phone after repeated attempts to reach his office. “We didn’t have any communications. We still don’t have outside communications.”

He said FEMA officials have now informed him the first members of a liaison team might arrive at the Emergency Operations Center this morning or Sunday.

Staffers also are upset by Thursday comments by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill. that suggested he felt the city shouldn’t be rebuilt. Asked in the interview whether it made sense to spend billions rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he replied, ``I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me.''

He said several of Hastert’s comments are posted on the center’s wall, “like the comments of opposing coaches are pinned on the wall of the Saints locker room.”

Hastert's office later issued a statement insisting he was not calling for the city to be abandoned or relocated.

Maestri admitted he and his staff were tired and frustrated, and that that helped fuel his criticism. Also on his list for criticism was new Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Assistant Director Jeff Smith, who he talked to for the first time only on Thursday.

Maestri said the communications problem has occurred despite the funneling of millions of dollars of Homeland Security grant money into parishes and state coffers, much to upgrade communications equipment. Jefferson Parish used that money successfully for an internal radio system that worked well during the storm, he said. But the state assigned those dollars to the Louisiana State Police, which he said hadn’t completed connecting it to the parish communications system.

Maestri also was upset with American Red Cross officials for delaying the staffing of shelters in the parish. He said a Red Cross official said he should send a staffer to Mount Olive, La., with a request for personnel. When the staffer arrived, he was handed a note saying help would not be coming until it was safe for Red Cross workers.

“They can go to Iraq and Afghanistan and tell us it’s too dangerous to
New Orleans,” he said. “I’ve got that note and will frame it with a copy of my resignation letter for the board of directors” of the southeastern Louisiana Red Cross.

Maestri said some of his frustration is fueled by conversations with several parish business owners who donated goods to the parish for use in the recovery.

“They’re saying, ‘Come. Please get it because we’re relocating. We can no longer work here,’” Maestri said.

Kanye West to Mike Meyers And The Nation: "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People"

In a rushed transcript, Kanye West, the brilliant multi-platinum selling hip hop producer and performer, announced the following to the nation and the world on live television during the Concert For Hurricane Relief. By the time you read this, the whole world will probably already know, so why shouldn't you hear it too?

Keeping Memphis Informed: Gasoline Price Watch

There's a great resource for Memphians stinging from the gas crisis to keep on top of the best local prices. MemphisGasPrices.com has a system where you can let people know where you're getting the best per-gallon price and find out from others where they're finding a deal. You can also let people know where you're getting gouged or paying more than the national average price per gallon so that people can avoid those retailers overcharging customers and report them to the appropriate authorities. Bookmark the page, we're all going to need it.

Fats Domino Missing In New Orleans Disaster

From Associated Press:
NEW YORK - Fats Domino was missing Thursday, days after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, said his longtime agent, Al Embry.

Embry told The Associated Press that he hadn't been able to contact Domino since talking to him Sunday evening by phone.

The 77-year-old R&B legend, whose real name is Antoine Domino, told Embry that he planned to stay at his New Orleans house with his wife, Rosemary, and their daughter.

"I hope somebody turns him up, but as of right now, we haven't got anybody that knows where he's at," said Embry, who has worked with Domino for 28 years. "I would think he might be safe because somebody said he was on top of the balcony."

RIP R.L. Burnside

R.L. Burnside, one of the last living truly legendary Delta blues musicians, died this morning in Memphis. No further details about this tragic loss have been made public at this time. My thoughts and prayers go out to his clan and his many, many friends throughout the world during this very difficult time.

[R.L. Burnside - I Wish I Was In Heaven Sitting Down]

From AllMusic:

North Mississippi guitarist R.L. Burnside is one of the paragons of state-of-the-art Delta juke joint blues. The guitarist, singer and songwriter was born November 23, 1926 in Oxford, MS, and makes his home in Holly Springs, in the hill country above the Delta. He's lived most of his life in the Mississippi hill country, which, unlike the Delta region, consists mainly of a lot of small farms. He learned his music from his neighbor, Fred McDowell, and the highly rhythmic style that Burnside plays is evident in McDowell's recording as well. Despite the otherworldly country-blues sounds put down by Burnside and his family band, known as the Sound Machine, his other influences are surprisingly contemporary: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins. But Burnside's music is pure country Delta juke joint blues, heavily rhythm-oriented and played with a slide.

It's only recently that he's been hitting full stride with his tours and his music, thanks to the efforts of Fat Possum Records. In recent years, the label has issued recordings made by a group of Burnside's peers, including Junior Kimbrough, Dave Thompson and others.

Up until the mid-'80s, Burnside was primarily a farmer and fisherman. After getting some attention in the late '60s via folklorists David Evans and George Mitchell (Mitchell recorded him for the Arhoolie label), he recorded for the Vogue, Swingmaster and Highwater record labels. Although he had done short tours, it wasn't until the late '80s that he was invited to perform at several European blues festivals. In 1992, he was featured alongside his friend Junior Kimbrough (whose Holly Spings juke joint Burnside lives next to), in a documentary film, Deep Blues. His debut recording, Bad Luck City, was released that same year on Fat Possum Records. Burnside has a second record out on the Oxford-based Fat Possum label, Too Bad Jim (1994).

These recordings showcase the raw, barebones electric guitar stylings of Burnside, and on both recordings he's accompanied by a small band, which includes his son Dwayne on bass and son-in-law Calvin Jackson on drums, as well as guitarist Kenny Brown. Both recordings also adequately capture the feeling of what it must be like to be in Junior Kimbrough's juke joint, where both men have been playing this kind if raw, unadulterated blues for over 30 years. This is the kind of downhome, backporch blues played today as it has been for many decades. In 1996, Burnside teamed with indie-rocker Jon Spencer to cut A Ass Pocket O' Whiskey for the hip Matador label; he returned to Fat Possum in 1998 for the more conventional Come on In. My Black Name A-Ringin' followed a year later and Mississippi Hill Country Blues and Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down were released in 2000. Well Well Well and Goin' Down South both appeared in 2001.
