New York's world-famous, much-loved, and richly lauded
Plaza Hotel, one of the most important landmarks in New York City, will be closing its doors forever as of April 30, 2005. There has been a
long and hard-fought battle with New York residents and
Mayor Michael Bloomberg vehemently oposing the move. However, nothing could be done to keep the owners of The Plaza, Elad Properties, from closing the hotel and converting it to condominiums and stores. The official word has been sent out and those with reservations after April 30 are being notified that they will have to stay somewhere else. Details about future plans are very broad and sketchy, but one thing is known for certain: 864 employees of the hotel will be jobless as of May 1st.
